Creamy Cheddar Cheese Sauce
Ingredients
- 3 tbsp (45 mL) butter
- 3 tbsp (45 mL) all-purpose flour
- 1 ¾ cups (425 mL) milk
- 1 cup (250 mL) grated sharp cheddar cheese (4 oz/125 g)
- ½ tsp (2 mL) dry mustard
- ½ tsp (2 mL) salt
- ⅛ tsp (0.5 mL) ground cayenne pepper
Directions
- In a 3-qt. (2.8-L) Stainless Steel Sauce Pan, melt butter over medium heat. Add flour; whisk until well blended. Cook 1 minute, whisking constantly (do not allow to brown). Add milk all at once; whisk until smooth. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly until thickened. Cook an additional 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Remove from the heat. Add the cheese, mustard, salt and cayenne pepper; whisk until smooth.
Yield:
- 2 cups (500 mL) sauce
servings of ¼ cup (60 mL) sauce
