Stoneware
Stoneware is one of our signature products—you'll definitely hear people rave about it when you mention you're a consultant! So, what is it, and what do you need to know?
What is stoneware?
Learn more >
- It's made from natural clay that's mined in the USA (and all the pieces are made here, too!).
- Each piece is formed into one of our exclusive designs, fired at 2,000°F, and hand finished. Every piece is a one-of-a-kind creation, so they all look and feel unique.
- Natural clay can vary in color, so some pieces may be a slightly different color.
- Whether it's glazed or unglazed, all our stoneware pieces share
the same cooking properties.
Why cook with stoneware?
Learn more >
- Light, crispy results. Stoneware draws moisture away, so you get crispy crusts, juicy meat, even browning, and light baked goods.
- Even cooking. The surface of stoneware evenly distributes heat, so your food cooks evenly on all sides. It even minimizes the need to stir or turn food while it cooks!
- Serve it warm. Stoneware holds onto heat, so your dishes will be warm longer.
- Oven to table. You can cut and serve right from your stones. Knives and metal utensils won't hurt it. Plus, the pieces look great!
- Naturally nonstick. A nonstick seasoning builds up with every use: the darker it looks, the better it cooks.
- Virtually nonporous. It won't retain oils, odors, or flavors from past meals.
- Plus, it’s conventional- and convection-oven safe, as well as microwave- and freezer-safe.
Seasoning your stoneware
Learn more >
- Unlike cast-iron, stoneware doesn’t have to be pre-seasoned before its used. Seasoning is the result of a gradual buildup of oil from the food you cook.
- For the first few times you use your stoneware, lightly brush it with oil. Or, cook a high-fat food like refrigerated biscuits.
- Don’t use cooking spray. It leaves a sticky residue, so it's not recommended.
- Over time, stoneware will change from its natural color to a deep brown. The color might be uneven based on what you’ve cooked on it. For example, if you use a stone mostly for pizza, the center might not season as quickly as the edges.
Avoiding thermal shock
Because cold contracts and heat expands, thermal shock can happen when hot and cold come together…leading to cracks and broken stoneware. To keep it from happening, don't preheat or presoak stoneware, and follow these guidelines:
Learn More >
- Keep your stone ⅔ covered, evenly distributing your food over the surface. We offer sizes and shapes for every need.
- Food refrigerated in stoneware can be placed directly in a preheated oven.
- To make frozen food, like frozen pizza, put it on the stone and place it immediately in a preheated oven. Don't put frozen food on stoneware while you wait for the oven to heat up; the food will chill the stone, and the heat of the oven can cause thermal shock.
- Thaw dense food like meat before cooking.
- Follow recipe temperature and baking times. Short bake times—under 12 minutes—might need an extra 1–2 minutes.
- Never put empty stoneware in the oven to preheat.
- Don’t expose stoneware to direct heat such as a broiler, stovetop burner, or barbecue grill, even for a short amount of time.
- Stoneware is conventional- and convection-oven-safe to 450°F, as well as microwave- and freezer-safe.
Cleaning your stoneware
Learn More >
- Let stoneware cool to room temperature before cleaning. Rinse with hot water, using a Pan Scraper or kitchen brush to remove food.
- To remove excess oil or food, sprinkle stoneware with baking soda and add a few drops of water to make a paste. Allow the paste to dry, then rinse off.
- Hand wash only.
